Unedited coverage of an the kick-off event for the City's Black History Month celebrations sponsored by Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities at the Arctic Building, Dome Room. The theme for this event is "Patriotism from the African American Perspective." Emceed by Ven Knox (Director of the City of Seattle's Human Services Department). Featuring singing performances by McKinney. Poem read by Yonee (SCL employee's son) regarding the terrorist attacks on September 11th the previous year. Rick Krochalis (President, Sustainable Seattle) and Ray Victurine (Executive Director, Sustainable Seattle) present the Sustainable Community Outstanding Leadership Award for Social Justice to Dr. Maxine Mimms. As the keynote speaker, Carl Mack, former president of Seattle’s local chapter of the NAACP, provides a presentation on the history of Black History Month. John Gay III from the City Light Black Employee Association (CLBEA) presents the 2002 CLBEA scholarship to Lucy West (who also speaks and reads a poem). Additional speakers include Mayor Greg Nickels.
