Description
Containing 126 digitized polaroids and a detailed logbook, the Market Park Totem Pole Construction photograph collection documents the carving, transport, delivery and raising of two 50 foot, red cedar totem poles at Market Park on March 11, 1984.nnThe project was initiated by Victor Steinbrueck in 1982 and commissioned to native carver Marvin Oliver and subsequently to non-native carver Jim Bender. Referred to as totem pole #1 and totem pole #2 in Steinbrueck's logbook, the photographs provide an inside look at the fabrication of the poles that would come to be known as the Untitled Pole and the Farmer's Pole, respectively. Photos show the carvers, their job site, tools, and the progress of the project from rough carving through opening day celebrations. nnProviding a narrative timeline for the photographs the logbook details Steinbrueck's trips to the job site on Bainbridge Island, his assessment of the project's progress, and interactions with Oliver and Bender. Also included are his detailed notes on costs and design details such as paint samples for the poles. The logbook begins in November 1982 and ends in August 1983. The photos begin in 1982 and end in 1984.
