Paul Schell was elected Seattle's 50th mayor for the term beginning January 1, 1998. He subsequently was defeated in the primary election in a run for a second term. Schell received a law degree from Columbia University in 1963 and moved to Seattle in 1967. He served as the director of the City's Department of Community Development (1975-1977) before establishing a private development company. He entered the political arena in 1989 when he was elected to the Port of Seattle Commission. From 1992-1995 he was Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Washington. Schell was born in 1937.
