Correspondence and related email attachments regarding Department of Planning and Development business including permitting, zoning policies for construction and type of business, health and safety, environmental compliance, and community development. Of note during Sugimura’s tenure was the encouraging the revitalization of neighborhood areas, including the Chinatown-International District; working with the Seattle Department of Transportation in streetscape improvement projects; the effects of marijuana legalization; rezones for downtown and South Lake Union and the Equitable Development Initiative.

Biographical
Diane Sugimura was the Director of Planning and Development for 14 years from 2002-2016 and was with the city for 38 years. She recieved degrees from the University of Washington and Oregon State University. She was named an Honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Seattle in 2005; a member of the Green Building Advisory Group for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation of North America, 2006-07; 2007 Public Employee of the Year awarded jointly by the local chapters of Master Builders Association and the American Planning Association; named a Living Building Hero by the International Living Future Institute and a Cascadia Fellow by the Cascadia Green Building Council, both in 2013; and named Public Employee of the Year by the Municipal League Foundation in 2016.
