A fifth generation Seattleite, Tanya Woo was part of a Chinese-American family that first came to the city in 1887. She grew up on Beacon Hill and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Washington. Woo was involved in the redevelopment of the Louisa Hotel and volunteered for the Chinatown-International District Community Watch. In 2023, she ran for the District 2 seat on City Council but was defeated by Tammy Morales. When Teresa Mosqueda resigned from Position 8 in January 2024 after being elected to King County Council, Woo was appointed to fill the seat until the next election. She was defeated in November 2024 by Alexis Mercedes Rinck.
