Scope and Contents Note

Records of the committee including agendas, appointments, ordinances, letters, speeches, reports, and documentation of public attendance. Issues discussed in this committee pertain to sustainability and transportation, with topics such as public transportation systems, bike and pedestrian pathways, and street vacations. Particular note should be given to discussions surrounding the Seattle Arena, the Burke-Gilman "missing link," the expansion of the LINK light rail system to Ballard and West Seattle, and the convention center expansion.

Historical Note

Born and raised in the Seattle area, Mike O'Brien earned an economics degree from Duke University and an MBA from the University of Washington. He served as chief financial officer at the law firm of Stokes Lawrence and was heavily involved in the Sierra Club.

O'Brien was elected to City Council in 2009 and was reelected in 2013. In 2015 Council was reorganized to be based on districts, and he was elected to represent District 6. While in office, he focused on issues including homelessness, climate change, social justice, and labor rights. He chose not to run again in 2019.
