Scope and Contents Note

Records in this series reflect O'Brien's focus on environmental concerns, including issues such as the Green New Deal, carbon neutrality, alternative energy, recycling, green infrastructure, and conservation. Transportation issues are well represented, including bicycle, pedestrian, and transit planning. Other topics include homelessless, utilities, affordable housing, parks, public safety, neighborhood planning, and land use and zoning. Digital images show O'Brien at various official events, includes Oath of Office.

Biographical Note

Born and raised in the Seattle area, Mike O'Brien earned an economics degree from Duke University and an MBA from the University of Washington. He served as chief financial officer at the law firm of Stokes Lawrence and was heavily involved in the Sierra Club.

O'Brien was elected to City Council in 2009 and was reelected in 2013. In 2015 Council was reorganized to be based on districts, and he was elected to represent District 6. While in office, he focused on issues including homelessness, climate change, social justice, and labor rights. He chose not to run again in 2019.
