Scope and Contents Note
The 32 photographs in this collection are primarily of Sam Smith and date from 1968 and 1975. They were donated by Debra Harrick, daughter of Evelyne Adler and were taken while she worked for Councilmember Sam Smith. Many of the photographs are by Hieb. The photographs are of Sam Smith's inauguration in 1968 and other unidentified events. Selected items are viewable in Digital Collections.

Historical Note
Evelyne Mannhalt Adler (1940-2004) worked as secretary to Councilmember Sam Smith from 1972 to 1977. She also worked for him in his capacity as State Representative from 1965 to 1967. Sam Smith was elected to Seattle City Council on November 7, 1969. He was the first African American elected to City Council and served for 24 years, chairing the Public Safety Committee (1968-1973, 1978-1981), Housing and Human Services Committee (1982-1985), Labor Committee (1988-1989), and the Utilities Committee (1990-1991). He served as Council President in 1974-1977 and 1986-1989.
