Local Improvement District Index Cards
Scope and Contents Note
Cards maintained by the Board of Public Works to index local improvement district projects by street. For each project listed, information includes the nature of the work (paving, water mains, sewers, etc.), resolution number, LID number, and map number. Cards are arranged by street name, first alphabetically and then numerically for numbered streets. For each letter and number there are separate cards for completed projects and those that were indefinitely postponed. The cards appear to cover projects from the City's first LID up through at least the mid-1980s and possibly until the abolition of the Board in 1992.

The Board of Public Works was created to coordinate public works projects, to award construction contracts on behalf of the City, and to approve contractorâs bills. The Board also ensured that prevailing wages were paid on City projects. The Board was originally establish by the 1890 City Charter as a citizen group. The Charter of 1896 reorganized the Board and thereafter its members included the superintendents of City departments directly involved in public works. The Board was abolished by City Charter amendment in 1992 and its functions were assumed by the Department of Administrative Services.
