Seattle at 150
Chapter 3: Growing Up (1910-1929)

image here

Seattle adjusted to its new size in the 1910s and 1920s. The skyline rose, especially after the construction of the Smith Tower in 1914 introduced “skyscrapers” to Seattle. Issues like managing traffic, allocating land use, and accommodating increasing demands on utilities occupied city officials. Tensions over who belonged in Seattle and the consequences of discrimination shaped daily life for some members of the community, prompting them to seek remedies from city officials and agencies.
