Seattle at 150 Chapter 6: Becoming a Global City (1946-1962)

After the war, residents turned to city government as they grappled with a central business district losing business to the suburbs and a new emphasis on automobile transportation. State and federal projects such as the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the Seattle Freeway (and almost the R. H. Thomson Expressway) changed the way people moved around the city. Urban renewal programs reshaped the built environment, and the Model Cities program improved environmental and personal health in long-neglected neighborhoods.
