Seattle at 150 Chapter 8: Boomtown Redux (1991-2019)
Since the 1990s, Seattle has been in a new boom time, fueled by the tech industry, that is very similar to the burst of growth and change at the turn of the last century. City projects have supported efforts to expand Seattle’s role on the world stage. As the population and median income have grown, Seattle has tried to tackle land-use issues, housing shortages, and income inequality. In response to activism around LGBTQ rights, the city has steadily grown more inclusive—from instituting domestic partnerships to celebrating marriage equality. The Race and Social Justice Initiative, begun in 2005, has led to new analyses and new standards for policymaking to ensure that the institutional racism embedded in city government’s structures can be identified and race-based disparities ended.
