Historical Note

The Rainier Beach Collection was donated by Erlyn Jensen, born in 1933. Much of the collection came from her mother, Ruth Katherine Erlenmeyer Moore, who worked for CK (Cullen K) Sturtevant in his antique shop on Waters Street from the mid-1930s until after his death in the mid-1950s. Ruth came from North Dakota and moved to Rainier Beach when she married Gillis Detmer Moore (known as Gill or Dinty). Gillis moved to Rainier Beach in 1900 when he was four years old; he died in 1961. Their house was built on the former site of C K Sturtevant's tennis courts. Ruth died in 1980.
