Board of Public Works Annual Reports

 Series
Identifier: 1802-F3

Scope and Contents note

There are only two annual reports before 1947: 1908 and 1928. The reports beginning in 1947 are a good source for statistical information; some reports contain almost purely statistics. Information on the types of contracts awarded by the City is available in these reports. They also provide an overview of the main areas of development in the City as they list addresses for Local Improvement Districts and general improvements relating to paving, water mains and sewers, and for other general improvements. The reports also list the members of the Board. Reports from the late 1970s contain information on activities related to cable communications. There is also discussion, in the reports for the 1970s and 1980s, of the Board's work utilizing Women and Minority Business Enterprise.

Historical Note

The Board of Public Works was created to coordinate public works projects, to award construction contracts on behalf of the City, and to approve contractor's bills. The Board also ensured that prevailing wages were paid on City projects. The Board was originally establish by the 1890 City Charter as a citizen group. The Charter of 1896 reorganized the Board and thereafter its members included the superintendents of City departments directly involved in public works. The Board was abolished by City Charter amendment in 1992 and its functions were assumed by the Department of Administrative Services.

General Note

A Comptroller or Clerk File (CF) can consist of correspondence, reports, petitions, contracts, agreements, etc. from elected officials, City departments, other government agencies, or the general public, which have been placed on file with the Office of the City Clerk (OCC). They are primarily permanent records, but also include routine material which was periodically purged. Certain archival records identified in the CF have been removed, arranged into records series, and incorporated into the collection of the Seattle Municipal Archives, a program of the OCC.
